Marysee Prairie 30th Anniversary Celebration

Not much stops the volunteers at Marysee Prairie from working on the land every first Saturday. When asked about the hot summer months- Ellen Buchanan says “Well, we just get out here a little earlier in the morning.” Sign up for a monthly workday

So, it was no surprise that for hours prior to this spring’s Marysee Prairie 30th Anniversary Celebration, there were volunteers cutting and applying herbicide to invasive woody shoots in the middle of the property. As visitors from across East Texas began to arrive for the party, the volunteers exchanged loppers for iced tea and conversation.

Thirty-five guests enjoyed the beautiful day that followed, including a nature walk through the prairie, plenty of food, and a lively discussion of conservation goals in the region.

Marysee Prairie will continue to thrive, thanks in no small part to the many committed volunteers who have put in 30 years of management, leadership, and certainly sweat.

TLC was proud to acknowledge many of the longtime volunteers who have kept Marysee Prairie the only protected remnant of native coastal prairie in the Big Thicket area. Among them are Maxine Johnston, Susan Schinke, Tom Maddux, Brandt Mannchen, and Ellen Buchanan. This work wouldn’t be possible without coordination of the Big Thicket Association and the Houston Sierra Club members.
