Preserving A Natural Gem: Uniting to Conserve Taylor Bayou Forest

Texas Land Conservancy is proud to announce our newest partnership with the Galveston Bay Foundation, an organization dedicated to safeguarding Galveston Bay's ecological health and vitality since 1987. Together, we are working to ensure the permanent protection of a 106-acre property known as Taylor Bayou Forest, the largest remaining natural forest in La Porte, Texas.

Preserving a Texas Treasure

The Galveston Bay Foundation's acquisition of Taylor Bayou Forest was made possible through funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, supported by a Department of Justice Settlement. This $3.7 million property holds not only environmental significance but also serves as a crucial asset to the local community. Nestled adjacent to Taylor Bayou, which flows into both Clear Lake and Galveston Bay, the forest provides essential benefits to air quality, wildlife habitat, open space, and water quality in the surrounding area.

A Win-Win for Nature and the Community

Without the dedicated efforts of the Galveston Bay Foundation and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the pressure for development could have led to the loss of this ecologically valuable land. Instead, Taylor Bayou Forest will now be preserved forever, ensuring that its unique ecological attributes are safeguarded.

This project protects some of the last remaining natural habitat in La Porte and provides many benefits to its residents. This is a big win for the local community and for Galveston Bay as the Foundation intends to do more than just protect this property but also enhance the habitat by means of invasive species management. The property also sits across the street from Bayshore Elementary School, and the hope is that the Foundation will develop potential educational opportunities that will allow students to visit and connect with the area in the future.

A Haven for Biodiversity

The Taylor Bayou Forest is a haven for biodiversity, featuring a vibrant diversity of woody species, including willow oak, water oak, sweetgum, and occasional pine trees. Seasonally inundated habitats within the property provide excellent nesting and resting grounds for a variety of birds, both resident and migratory. Importantly, this property plays a vital role in supporting millions of birds during their migratory movements through the Gulf of Mexico each spring and autumn.

As the holder of the conservation agreement, Texas Land Conservancy is instrumental in ensuring the long-term success and preservation of this invaluable property. Walking through Taylor Bayou Forest, the sounds of cars are muffled, and the solace of nature takes over, serving as a reminder of the tranquility and beauty that nature provides.

This partnership between the Galveston Bay Foundation and Texas Land Conservancy is a powerful example of collaboration and community conservation in action. Together, we are not just protecting a forest; we are preserving a living legacy for generations to come. We invite you to join us in celebrating this monumental achievement in the ongoing effort to safeguard Texas' natural wonders. Together, we can ensure that Taylor Bayou Forest remains a sanctuary for wildlife, a source of pride for the community, and a symbol of our commitment to preserving the beauty and diversity of our natural world.

Help protect more properties like this across the state!

Texas Land Conservancy could not do this important conservation work without our members, partners, and supporters. With your support, we can work with more landowners and protect more land across the state from the negative effects of land fragmentation and poorly-planned development.
